Project overview
About this development
The project will entail the treatment of stock-piled uranium through a dedicated uranium processing facility. The uranium will be mined concurrently with the mining of copper ore from within the existing Malundwe and Chimwungo pits and stockpiled in a dedicated facility. Lumwana is located in the North Western Province of Zambia, 220 km west of the Copperbelt and 65 km west of the town of Solwezi. Given the very large resource and long mine life at Lumwana there is an opportunity to further expand throughput to about 35 million tonnes per year, increasing copper production to about 300,000 tonnes per year. Such a further expansion would require significant additional capital cost and be subject to the completion of a feasibility study. The feasibility study has confirmed the potential viability of on-site uranium treatment in a dedicated uranium plant designed to treat one million tons of ore a year. The capital cost for the project is estimated at $583.8 million.
