About this development
Sasol is developing two new coal mines in Secunda in Mpumalanga. Sasol will be investing over R3 billion in Impumulelo (formerly called Carmona). The proposed Impumulelo Mine, mine boundary covers a total area of approximately 21 000 ha. It is anticipated that 252 Mt ROM coal is present in situ within this mine boundary area. It is anticipated that 80 000 tons of coal will be mined from the proposed Impumelelo Mine in its first year of operation. Thereafter progressively more coal will be mined each year until an annual production rate of approximately 8.5 Mt is reached. This ramp up period will take approximately 8 years. It is anticipated that less coal will be mined in the last 3 to 4 years of production. Estimated project value: R4.6-billion.
