About this development
Construction of a coal operation in Mpumalanga that will include the construction of an opencast mine. The Goedgevonden coal-mine, which is at the heart of a new coal company created by African Rainbow Minerals (Arm) and the London-listed Xstrata plc, will be built, managed and mined by Xstrata Coal South Africa. When built, the mine will produce 3,2 billion tons of coal a year for the export market and a further 3,4-billion tons a year for the domestic market. The project includes the construction of a modern infrastructure area, workshop, administration buildings, a water treatment plant and coal handling preparation facility. Other aspects include two product stackers, five bridges, a 9,4 km rail loop, a road diversion, two river diversions and a series of water storage ponds. The capital cost of the project is estimated at R3.2 billion.
