Project overview
About this development
Sasol New Energy Holdings (Pty) Ltd (Sasol) proposes to construct a gas engine power plant. Phase 1 will entail an open cycle power plant with an output capacity of approximately 180 MW, while phase 2 entails conversion to a combined cycle (heat recovery) which will generate an additional 20 MW. The location is Erf 8037, Sasolburg, in the Free State, (next to the existing Steam Station Two site). The plant will use several gas engines, with a natural gas consumption of approximately 10 PJ/a. The design for individual gas engine units will vary from 4 MW to 10 MW per engine. The project requires a site of approximately 300 metres by 150 metres. The project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions for the Sasol group by replacing less efficient coal fired boilers over the long term, thereby promoting sustainability. The generation plant will also increase Sasol's internal production of power, making Sasol more self-sufficient and less dependent on the grid.
