Coal and Tar Filtration Plant

Construction of a new coal and tar filtration plant at Sasol Synfuels in Secunda, Mpumalanga Province. This will include three filter presses, two in operation and one on standby, and a water stripper. The location of the proposed development is Erven 8488, Secunda Extension 35 with the extent of the development being 100 x 100m. The proposed upgrade will involve the construction of a new CTF West Plant utilising superior tar cleaning methods offered by the new filtration process, which is also considered to offer environmentally friendly improvements over the existing technology. The solids will be removed in the Filter Press Unit and transported to the existing Solids Mixing Plant. The Tar Filtrate will then proceed to the Evaporator section for atmospheric water stripping. The plant will be an enclosed system and vapours will be routed to a VOC reduction unit to limit VOC emissions. The Crude Tar Product from the Evaporator is then pumped to the Crude Tar Tanks in the Tank Farm, since no further processing at the CTF will be required.
