The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), which is the infrastructure arm of the City of Johannesburg, is upgrading gravel roads to asphalt in Finetown Proper. It has completed site establishment for the project. The project will not only improve accessibility but also stimulate economic growth, enhance safety, and elevate the overall living standards of the community. Finetown Proper township is located 30km south-west of the Johannesburg Central Business District (CBD) in Region D. The upgrading of graded roads to asphalt in Finetown Proper aims to construct a safe and reliable surfaced road and stormwater accommodation infrastructure that will lead to improved movement systems for vehicles and pedestrians.

The first phase will focus on 1.070km, which encompasses Road D (approximately 431m) and Simmonds and Wilson Street (approximately 639m).

It will also include the construction of 189m of the stormwater pipeline for Road D Street with kerb inlets and the construction of 128m of the stormwater pipeline for Wilson and Simmonds Street with kerb inlets.

The R6.5 million first phase of the project will address issues surrounding community health (stormwater) as well as safety (roads). The scope of work includes, but is not limited to:

• Relocation, raising, or lowering of existing services (e.g. existing sewer manholes);
• Earthworks, new roads layer works, asphalt surfacing, and gravel shoulders;
• Construction of new stormwater infrastructure;
• Remedial work/connection to existing stormwater services where required;
• Cutting through existing surfaced road(s) for installation of new stormwater line and
• reinstating the layer works and surfacing;
• Construction of pre-cast kerbing;
• Installation of road signage;
• Road markings.

The JDA’s objective is that the project's implementation plays a critical role in job creation and skills development for SMMEs in the ward by creating employment and empowerment opportunities.

The implementation of this project also aims to achieve the following:

• Improve the movement of goods and people within the Finetown Proper township and neighbouring communities,
• Improve the conditions in the affected residential areas, and
• Uplift the community’s pride.

“The JDA is at the forefront of infrastructure development in the City of Johannesburg, driving projects that enhance the urban landscape, promote economic growth, and improve the overall quality of life for its residents,” said Siyabonga Genu, the JDA’s acting CEO.

“The road project aligns with the JDA’s emphasis on developing resilient, sustainable, and liveable urban areas in identified transit nodes and corridors,” he said.

Once completed, the JDA will hand over the project to the Johannesburg Roads Agency.
