About this development
Exxaro Resources is looking at construction of another coal mine on the Waterberg field in Limpopo Province adjacent to its existing Grootegeluk operation. The first part of the three-phase expansion would be in the form of a brownfields expansion of the existing mine; the second would be a greenfields development. The Waterberg coalfield contains more than 50% of South Africa’s remaining coal reserves. The new coal mine is scheduled to produce its first coal in the second half of 2021 and ramp up intil the end of 2022, in line with the development ram-up schedule of the power station which is expected to be operationals in 2022/23. Estimated project value for Phase 1 : R3.4 billion. The exact co-ordinates are currently not available however the approximate area of location is lat: -23.7087132; long: 27.3701706.
