Firestone Energy are hoping to establish a first stage, opencast mine on the Smitspan farm in the Waterberg region, in the Limpopo Province, which would be expanded to meet market demand. The Smitspan first stage mine would costs of 4,1 km west-to-east and 2,2 km north-to-south dimensions and would only be 75m deep down to the base of coal seam number seven with a very low waste/coal strip ration and top coal within 28 m of the surface.
