About this development
Development of a small-scale coal mining operation in South Africa’s Waterberg region, in Limpopo Province. The project comprises three farms in the Waterberg coalfield totalling some 7,8 ha, and entails the construction of an opencast coal mine on the Smitspan farm. The JV planned to mine about 60 000 t/m of run-of-mine coal, which after washing would yield about 30 000 t/m of saleable product, of which about a quarter would be high calorific value, low-ash product and three-quarters would be suitable for use as power station feed. The project is estimated at R10 billion. The exact co-ordinates are currently not available however the approximate area of location is lat: -23.7087132; long: 27.3701706.
