About this development
Upgrade to Kenyas sole refinery at the coastal port town of Mombasa at a cost of $322-million (about R2,25-billion). Of the $322-million, $203-million will go towards the actual upgrade of the refinery and investment in clean fuel technology, $45-million to build facilities to import, store and transport liquid petroleum gas. Another $22-million will be used to build the first phase of improving the refinery terminal, while the rest of the amount is financing and interest charges during construction. The Kenya Petroleum Refineries has a capacity of 3 million tons per year (about 60 000 barrels per day) and is half-owned by the Kenyan government. Shell, British Petroleum and Caltex - part of the United States company Chevron - hold the remaining shares.
