Project overview
About this development
Construction of a water treatment works in the uMlazi River valley as part of the Umkhomazi Water Project Phase 1 in Kwazulu-Natal. The scope of works includes two 2 500 mm gravity pipelines to the Umgeni Water bulk distribution reservoir system, below the reservoir at Umlaas Road; a reservoir for the storage of treated water; and associated infrastructure. The water treatment works will have an ultimate capacity of 1 500 Ml/d, and will be capable of treating the 1:100 year scheme yield. The footprint of the proposed plant will be 600m by 350m (21 Ha), which will include space for a separate sludge treatment plant. The first phase of the uMWP would also comprise the construction of a new dam at Smithfield, a multi-level intake tower and pump station, a water transfer pipeline (possibly with associated tunnels) to Langa Balancing Dam on the uMlazi River (in-stream) in the Baynesfield area, a water treatment works and a gravity pipeline to a distribution reservoir at Umlaas Road. From here, water would be distributed under gravity to eThekwini and low-lying areas of Pietermaritzburg. Total estimated project value: R16.5 billion. The exact co-ordinates are currently not available however the approximate area of location is: -29.76222, 30.35055999999999
