About this development

Construction of a new dam at Smithfield (approximately 80m high) on the uMkhomazi River near Boston, as part of the Umkhomazi Water Project Phase 1 in Kwazulu-Natal. Smithfield Dam is proposed to have a gross storage capacity of 251 million m³. The first phase of the uMWP would also comprise a multi-level intake tower and pump station, a water transfer pipeline (possibly with associated tunnels) to Langa Balancing Dam on the uMlazi River (in-stream) in the Baynesfield area, a water treatment works and a gravity pipeline to a distribution reservoir at Umlaas Road. From here, water would be distributed under gravity to eThekwini and low-lying areas of Pietermaritzburg. Total estimated project value: R16.5 billion. The exact co-ordinates are currently not available however the approximate area of location is: 30°11'17.6"S 30°46'36.4"E
