About this development
Areva plans to invest $750 million to create the world's largest uranium mine, Trekkopje. Trekkopje is located about 300 kilometres west of capital Windhoek, in Namibia. The project consists of a large opencast mine with a pit about 2km wide and 6km long with facilities on-site for the production of yellow cake, otherwise known as uranium ore, primarily used in the production of nuclear energy. Trekkopje Mine is expected to become one of the world’s 10 largest uranium mines and will also be one of the top five low-cost open pit uranium operations in the world.
