Transnet Coallink Project - Sheepmoor

Construction of the Sheepmoor TSS and associated power lines, as part of a suite of projects collectively known as the Ermelo - Richards Bay Coal link Upgrade in Mpumalanga, within Msukaligwa Local Municipality. The proposed project entails the construction of a new 88/25kV traction substation with two 20MVA transformer bays at the Sheepmoor Traction Substation (TSS). The Substation will be fed from two new 88kV lines and will feed the existing 25kV traction line. The proposed traction substation site is located in the north-eastern sector of the town of Sheepmoor, 50m south of the Ermelo-Richards Bay railway line. The proposed 25kV power lines will be of 100m length and connect from the proposed traction substation to the existing 25kV railway power line. One line will run to the north and the other will run to the south. The northern circuit involves the establishment of a new 88kV power line from Sheepmoor to the existing 88kV line. The southern circuit involves the establishment of a new 88kV power line from Sheepmoor to the existing 88kV line. For both the proposed new northern and southern power lines, the structure is proposed to be a monopole structure and will cross agricultural and forestry land. All 88kV power lines will be constructed with 132kV capacity but operated at 88kV at inception, in order to cater for future capacity increases. The proposed Transnet Coallink Project consisting of the construction of transmission substations, upgrading of existing transmission power lines and the construction of new transmission power lines traversing KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga Provinces, from Empangeni to Ermelo south.
