About this development
Simandou is a world-class iron ore exploration and mining project located in Guinea's Guinée Forestiére and Haute Guinée regions. Simandou is the biggest known undeveloped iron ore deposit in the world. Rio Tinto's exploration and development efforts are focused on 738km² Simandou mining concession area, which represents only 18% of mining holdings in the Simandou range. The current plan for the Simandou project envisages construction of a mine with a capacity of 95 million tons a year of high-grade iron ore. Capital expenditure is estimated at about $18.3 billion.
