About this development
The project will involve the construction of a 238 km canal that will link landlocked Malawi's inland port of Nsanje through the Shire and Zambezi rivers to Mozambique Indian Ocean Port of Chinde. The waterway is expected to reduce the costs of imports and exports to Malawi by at least 60%. Malawi mainly uses road transport to gain access to the sea through the Mozambican port of Beira, Tanzania's Dar-Es-Salaam Port and South Africa's Durban port. Project value: $6 billion.
