Shaft No. 17 at Impala Platinum

Establishment of a , at Impala Platinum near Rustenburg in the North West Province, in order to maintain the current production level at the mine. The proposed No. 17 Shaft will include the following components : a main shaft, a ventilation shaft, a crusher, a waste rock dump, water-pollution management facilities, a compressed air line, a refrigeration plant, a workshop and administration buildings. No. 17 shaft to be alongside the large No. 16 shaft currently under construction. The proposed new No. 17 shaft would also be a fourth-generation shaft, but would be 1 922 m deep, the company’s deepest yet. Since there will be on increase in production from the operation of this shaft, the existing concentrator, smelter and tailing facilities will be used. Project value: R11.1 billion.
