Project overview
About this development
Construction of services and infrastructure for a new airport in Scottburgh in KwaZulu-Natal. The potential GLA is 308 000m². The existing Scottburgh airstrip is located on relatively flat privately owned agricultural land between the N2 and the R102 South Coast Road. The airstrip was previously licensed by the CAA, but is currently operated for recreational use only as an unlicensed field. The airstrip is approximately 700m long, but the site will accommodate extension to 1 650m (650 m longer than the current Virginia runway). By acquiring the "airstrip‟ site, an adjoining site and incorporating certain municipal land it is possible to create an integrated precinct of approximately 140 hectares (compared with Virginia‟s 30 Ha). 60 hectares will be reserved for core airport areas (runways, taxiways, apron and terminal zone), making the air platform four times larger than the currently developed area of Virginia. The terminal zone includes a public terminal, fire station to Cat 4/5, control tower and commercial facilities to be developed in phases up to 12 500 m², with public parking for up to 200 vehicles. Phase 1 will consist of the initial replication of the infrastructure currently at Virginia, and for the ultimate phase, being a 1650m runway developed to full ICAO Code 3C standards. This will allow the operation of all but the very largest General Aviation and Corporate aircraft, whilst accommodating the development of the full range of supporting GA and Training facilities in the precinct.
