Project overview
About this development
Construction of a 206 MW run-of-river hydroelectric power plant and associated infrastructure on the Ruzizi River, specifically between the Rusizi District and the Walungu Territory within three countries as it is a multi national project. Countries included: the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda, and Burundi. While most physical components are in Rwanda and DRC. Reservoir: Creation of a reservoir of approximately 46 hectares with a storage capacity of 1.9 million cubic meters. Water Conveyance: A 3.8 km long headrace tunnel and a 3.9 km long penstock on the Rwandan side, with a derivation channel on the Congolese side. Powerhouse: A surface powerhouse featuring three 70 MW Francis-type turbines and alternators. Transmission: A 7 km to 8.3 km long, 220 kV double-circuit transmission line connecting the powerhouse substation to the regional dispatch station at Kamanyola (DRC). Ancillary Works: Construction of access roads from Bugarama (Rwanda) and Kamanyola (DRC), worker camps, a permanent operators' village, and a small generating unit at the dam site for ecological flow power.
