Project overview
About this development
The restoration of the Barbican, in Johannesburg, Gauteng, will involve the complete rehabilitation of the exterior of the building, plus the complete rehabilitation of the interior to modernize it and the total rehabilitation of the roof. The building consists of a steel reinforced frame and timber floors. A major renovation was undertaken in 1965, when the owners decided to convert the ground and first floor into a motorcar showroom. They demolished the balcony that was originally built over the pavement, ripped out the shop front windows, and took away the first floor bay windows that run up the first four floors of the building. The missing bay windows will be restored on either side of the balcony. Old Mutual will spend around R19 million to restore and upgrade the building.
