Project overview
About this development
Construction of an increased capacity base metal refinery in Springs for Impala Platinum (plats). The company is now embarking on a further expansion., a R6.6 billion expenditure programme was approved for the simultaneous development of two new shaft systems, 16 and 20 shafts. These shafts, which are scheduled to begin production in 2012 and 2009 respectively, will together contribute 355,000 ounces of platinum to maintain Impala’s annual output at 1.1 million platinum ounces. Construction work on both shafts began in October 2004. The concrete headgear at 16 shaft will be the tallest in the world and will be, on completion, the deepest shaft at Impala Platinum. Output from these two shafts will replace production from other shafts which are nearing the end of their productive lives.
