Project overview
About this development
Construction of a pumped-storage scheme in Lesotho. The scheme could potentially yield 1000 MW of peaking capacity for consumption in Lesotho and South Africa. Several sites for the project were reportedly assessed by South African State-owned utility Eskom for their hydropower potential, with Monontsa being identified as a possible site. The initial reconnaissance study sought sites with an elevation of between 400m and 1000m that could also accommodate dams capable of storing about 20-million cubic metres of water, both at the top and at the bottom of the mountain. The value of this project has not been disclosed. The exact co-ordinates are currently not available however the approximate area of location is lat: -29.609988; long: 28.233608.
