Exxaro KZN Sands (Pty) Ltd intends to develop an opencast mine on farm no. 16362, (Umhlathuze Valley Sugar) and Harbour Lights Caravan Park, remainder lot 162 Umhlathuze, No 13928 to extract heavy mineral sands on the land that is currently under sugar cane farming and low density formal housing. The site is located north of the existing Hillendale mine lease area, immediately north of the Braeburn area, west of Mandlankala informal residential development and the road MR106, Umhlathuze, KwaZulu-Natal.
