The Grootvaly Colliery is situated east of the town of Springs (26°1432.22"S, 28°303.87"E); while the closest major towns to Springs are Boksburg (33km north west) and Nigel (22km south). Springs is approximately 49km by national road from Johannesburg. Steynol is proposing to mine Portions 21 and 22 of Farm Grootvaly 124IR. The proposed mining of clay and coal will only cover a footprint of 82.5ha. The Grootvaly will be an open pit mining operation, mining coal and clay. The estimated total amount of coal and clay to be excavated is approximately 1,280 million tonnes.
