About this development
Construction of the Ntsonyini Ngqongweni off channel storage dam, Contract 2, located approximately 90km east of Mthatha and 44km north-west of Port St Johns within the OR Tambo District Municipality, Eastern Cape. CIDB 9CE. The scope of works includes: Upgrading of the access road between the R61 and the dam site approximately 12 km. Establishment of a construction camp. Provision of temporary river diversion facilities. Establishing a quarry and crusher in the basin of the dam. Finalisation of excavation of dam foundations. Construction of the upstream plinth and galleries including: Foundation dowels; reinforced concrete elements; curtain grouting; drainage hole drilling. Hardfill manufacture and placement, including: Manufacture and sourcing of hardfill aggregates; cementitious materials storage facilities; completion of construction of a hardfill mixing platform; hardfill mix design development; full scale trial; transportation, placement and compaction of hardfill in the dam; placement and compaction of GEVR/GE-Hardfill; curing. Construction of the spillway, including: Conventional concrete ogee cap; spillway side walls; stilling basin, including drainage and doweling facilities. Construction of a reinforced concrete intake tower, including: Foundation dowels; structural steel crane elements, ladders, platforms, etc; valves and pipework; construction of a reinforced concrete valve chamber/access facility; construction of downstream RMC structure and construction of a rockfill-earthfill cofferdam at the abstraction works.
