About this development
Tanzania Ports Authority is planning to develop a new port at Mwambani Bay - Tanga to cater for the expected increase in traffic that cannot be accommodated at the existing port of Tanga in Tanzania. According to Ports Master Plan Study of 2009, it is expected that by year 2028 traffic volume through Tanga port will increase up to 4.5 million tons. The intrinsic capacity of the existing Tanga port is to handle 500,000 tons per annum. Currently the port of Tanga handles over 600,000, which is above the designed capacity. In order to cope with the demand for future traffic at Tanga Port, and in view of the limitations for expansion of the existing Tanga port, TPA is embarking on development new port at Mwambani Bay-Tanga. The proposed new port is expected to be linked to Lake Victoria by a new rail to be constructed from Tanga to Musoma. Estimated Project Value : $700 million.
