About this development
Construction of the New Modder East Gold Mine. This project will encompass a shallow underground mine (300m to 530m below surface), which is expected to product 180 000oz/y of gold by 2011. The decline will serve as a roadway for vehicles to transport rock and material into and out of the mine. The mining method to be employed will be conventional narrow reef mining. The project will be the first new mine to be built on the East Rand of Johannesburg in 28 years. Construction capital expenditure is expected to be about R814 million.
