About this development

The project will create a railroad corridor to link the Moatize coal mine to Nacala-á-Velha, where Vale will build a deep-water seaport. The railroad will cross into the neighbouring country of Malawi. The project involves the rehabilitating existing railroads and constructing a new stretch of railroad. The new railroad will have a capacity of 18 million tons a year. This project foresees a brand new railway between the border of Mozambique and Malawi and Nkaya Junction – close to Liownde, Malawi’s capital – that is 145.1 km long with a very demanding and difficult geography on a mixed land with large excavations and embankments. Total value of the project is $1.1 billion.
