About this development
Upgrading of 33.7km of road on National Route 2, between Mtunzini Toll Plaza (Section 28, km 42.7) and Empangeni T-Junction (Section 29, km 13.0) in KwaZulu-Natal Province. The scope of work includes the construction of a second carriageway to create a dual carriageway together with rehabilitation of the existing carriageway. The existing bridges over the Mlalazi and Umhlathuze River will be widened to accommodate the dual carriageway. There will be construction of four agricultural overpasses over the N2; the construction of a bridge over the Empangeni/Richards Bay Road, the construction of a road over rail bridges at two locations, the construction of numerous box culverts and pipe culverts for the new carriageway, and the upgrading of interchange ramps at the Esikaweni Interchange and the Empangeni Interchange to accommodate the upgrade of the N2.
