About this development

The proposed project will involve the construction of a 1500-MW hydropower scheme at Mphanda Nkuwa, 60km downstream from the existing dam at Cahora Bassa, as well as a separate 1400km long transmission line from Mphanda Nkuwa to the capital, Maputo. Mphanda Nkuwa will cost an estimated $1,6-billion to build, while the 1400km transmission line could cost up to $4.5-billion. The Mphanda Nkuwa dam will be made from compressed concrete and be 90 metres high and 700 metres long. Its reservoir will cover an area of 100 square kilometres. The exact co-ordinates are currently not available however the approximate area of location is lat: -16.3020579; long: 33.7048531.
