About this development
A new world-class soccer stadium will be built in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal in preparation for the 2010 Fifa World Cup. The Moses Mabhida Stadium is expected to replace the existing King's Park Soccer Stadium. A central feature of the strategy is to build a new iconic, world-class, multi-purpose soccer stadium on the site of the existing King's Park Soccer Stadium. Fifa standards require that semifinal stadiums have at least 70 000 seats - and also allow for multiple sporting uses. It will also bring together sport, arts and culture in the region and will also include a museum and multimedia centre, which will tell the story of the Zulu people and of KZN as a whole. The stadium will boast a 30-storey arch stretching across its entire length and will have underground parking for 10 000 cars. Walter Gilbert Road, will be converted into a pedestrian walkway. Project Value: R1.9 billion. Estimated overrun on budget will be R892 million.
