Upgrade of the Mombasa refinery in Kenya. A contract has been awarded to Foster Wheeler Energy to prepare the basis of design (BOD) for the proposed upgrade of the Mombasa refinery. Of the $322-million, $203-million will go towards the actual upgrade of the refinery and investment in clean fuel technology, $45-million to build facilities to import, store and transport liquid petroleum gas. Another $22-million will be used to build the first phase of improving the refinery terminal, while the rest of the amount is financing and interest charges during construction The Kenya Petroleum Refineries has a capacity of 3 million tons per year (about 60 000 barrels per day) and is half-owned by the Kenyan government. Shell, British Petroleum and Caltex - part of the United States company Chevron - hold the remaining shares. Project value : $1 billion.
