About this development
The Malawi National Water Development Programme (NWDP) involves the development of the country's rural and urban water-supply schemes, as well as promotion of resource management and capacity building in the water sector. The other component of the programme, the urban water supply project, involves the rehabilitation and extension of water supply systems in the major cities of Blantyre and Lilongwe and in other urban areas. The total cost is estimated at US$354.53 million (MK57.4 billion). The Project is financed by the Government of Malawi with donor assistance from World Bank, European Union, European Investment Bank, African Development Bank, Australian Aid, African Catalytic Growth Fund, and Government of Netherlands. Estimated cost: US$ 120million.
