Project overview
About this development
Construction of the Magwagwa Dam Multipurpose Project along the Sondu River in the western Kenya region. The proposed dam is located approximately 4 km downstream of the confluence of the Kipsonoi and Yurith tributaries near Magwagwa Town. This is a Vision 2030 Project and a key investment opportunity. The project covers five counties namely: Bomet, Nyamira, Kericho, Homabay, and Kisumu and is geared towards improving economic development in the LBDA region and the country as a whole. It will produce hydro power for socio-economic development, water supply for irrigation, domestic and industrial use, flood control, catchment management, fisheries development and tourism promotion. The dam and hydro power component comprises a 95m high and 450m long concrete faced rockfill dam (CFRD), appurtenant works, and transmission line. Upon filling, a reservoir of 17.7 km² will be created with an active storage of 445 million cubic meters. Underground works will consist of an 11 km head race tunnel, upstream surge shaft, underground powerhouse, downstream surge chamber and a 6 km long tailrace tunnel. The net command area for irrigation is 13,807ha. Phase I of the irrigation scheme development comprises the construction of 16 km long concrete lined main canal from Sondu-Miriu Powerhouse to the right bank of the Asawo river, secondary and tertiary canals, regulation structures and appurtenant works to cover 3,063ha. The water supply scheme will involve construction of an intake structure at Magwagwa Dam, the installation of bulk water supply pipes and construction of raw water tanks and treatment plants.
