Lupata Hydro Electric Power Plant, Mozambique

Construction of the Lupata hydroelectric power plant at Lupata in Mozambique. The Lupata project is forecast to cost US$1.1bn. The project involves the construction of a 600MW hydroelectric power plant, a concrete rockfill dam of 500m wide, height of 40m, a reservoir of 208km², powerhouse, longitudinal cofferdam, spillways, canals, substations, installation of 4 Kaplan turbines of 150MW (or 6 of 100 MW in Study), generators, transformers and the laying of transmission lines. The construction work will take place in four phases. The first phase of work includes the construction of one longitudinal cofferdam in order to protect the excavation to enable the building of the infrastructure of concrete. The second phase of work includes the construction of infrastructure and the beginning of the spillway excavation of the powerhouse, to locate them on the right bank of the river. In the third stage, the cofferdam will be constructed on upstream and downstream and the longitudinal cofferdam will be removed. During this step the flow will be diverted to the unloader, Thereby enabling the operations inherent in the next stage. The fourth phase of works includes the construction of the dam in the river bed, the system of water supply and power plant on the right bank of the river.
