Lion ferrochrome complex expansion phase 2, Limpopo

Construction of a 360 000-ton/annum ferrochrome smelter in Steelpoort, Limpopo. Phase 1 of the Lion ferrochrome project was commissioned in September 2006. The Xstrata project team is now conducting an economic study and budget for the 360 000-t/y phase 2 expansion of the ferro-chrome operation. The phase 2 expansion is expected to be a carbon copy of the first phase. The development will entail a total capital investment of R4.9 billion and includes R700 million for the concurrent development of the Magareng mine.
