Project overview
About this development
Development of a landfill gas extraction power project at Zuurfontein in Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng. The landfill gas projects effectively capture methane gas (a greenhouse gas), which escapes from the landfill, and use it to generate cleaner burning electricity. Thus cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions and allowing Annex 1 countries to buy the savings in carbon-dioxide (CO²) equivalent gases. The activities will be undertaken in three phases, namely (1) technical pre-feasibility – where landfill gas is qualified and quantified; (2) project development – entailing gas flaring and validation; and, (3) electricity production – where landfill gas is combusted to produce energy, which is then converted into electricity.
