Project overview
About this development
Construction of a solar photovoltaic and battery energy storage system (BESS) facility at The Komati Power Station, in Ward 4 of the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality located within the Nkangala District Municipality, in Mpumalanga. Komati Power Station will reach its end-of-life in September 2022 when Unit 9 will be shut down. Units 1 to 8 have already been shutdown. Eskom has developed a Just Energy Transition Plan (EJET P) aimed at mitigating the negative social impacts resulting from the shutting down of the plant and to implement projects for the repowering and repurposing related to the Komati power station. The Solar PV facilities, BESS facilities and associated infrastructure will be located on Eskom owned land. Eskom propose to establish up to four BESS facilities with the existing footprint of the Komati Power Station. The BESS footprints will range from 2ha up to 6ha. The BESS storage capacity will be up to 150MW. The centre point co-ordinates are 26°06'05.43"S 29°27'30.68"E
