The Mafla Coal prospecting area is 14 kilometers north of Dundee and 21 kilometers north-east of Glencoe. Historic geological information on the properties suggested that both the top and bottom seams were present in the area, and historically the top and bottom seams of the Klip River coal field have been exploited for anthracite and both soft and hard coking coal.
