About this development
The project envisages the construction of a manganese mine at Hotazel in the Northern Cape. The project overlies the Kalagadi Manganese Basin, a world-renowned source of manganese ore containing 80% of the world's known manganese resources. The mine is to produce about 1.5 million tonnes/year of manganese concentrate. The project is based on three farms of about 10,000 hectares and containing a billion tonnes of mineable manganese. Arcelor Mittal has arrived at a project value of $630 million (R4.3 billion). The cost of the project is reportedly escalating by about 2% a month.
