Project overview
About this development
The project proposes to develop the 750MW greenfield Kafue Gorge Lower Hydro Power Station. The project site is located on the Kafue River approximately 120km south of Lusaka and 55 km upstream of the confluence of Kafue River and Zambezi River in Zambia. The site is 17.3 km downstream of the existing 990MW Kafue Gorge Power Station (KGPS) dam site along the river course, and 5.9 km away from the KGPS tail-water outlet. A 140 metre high concrete faced rock-fill dam (CFRD), 8 to 10m crest width and approximately 378m long; spillway on left bank (64m overall width); flood release tunnel on right bank, maximum discharge capacity of 1018m3/s; environmental flow release from the dam to the tailrace outlet, minimum discharge capacity of 11m3/s; power intake; power tunnel (4.4km long, 12.8~14.4m diameter); surge chamber (height of 110m, diameter 28m); penstock (two penstocks, 400m long for each, diameter 8m~7m); surface powerhouse (44.5 m wide × 58 m high ×127 m long); 5 x 150MW generator-turbine units, rated head of 173m; tailrace channel 85m wide x 100m long; diversion tunnel on left bank, horse-shoe cross section (10m × 14m), 980m long; switchyard (51.8 m wide × 86.6 m long); access roads and township with social amenities.
