Grootgeluk coal mine expansion project, Limpopo province. The project will entail the potential expansion of Exxaro's Grootgeluk coal mine to produce an extra 7,3 million tons of thermal coal a year for the 45 00MW Medupi power station. The coal mine expansion follows the Grootgeluk 6 phase 1 project which was commissioned in July 2006. The Grootgeluk mine will, supply 7,3-million tons of power station coal to the first three units of Medupi each year over the expected 50-year life of the power station. Project value: The project will cost R9.5 billion. Building of employees' housing units will cost R590 million.
