Expansion of the Grootegeluk Coal Mine - To meet the recently announced contract to supply Eskom with 7,3 Mt/y of coal for the new Medupi power station at Lephalale, in Limpopo province. The Grootegeluk coal mine is situated 25 km from Lephalale, in Limpopo. The open- pit mine is 120 m deep, employs 1 900 people and produces 18,8 Mt/y of thermal and semi-soft coking coal using a conventional truck- and-shovel operation. It has estimated coal reserves of 740 Mt and a total coal resource of 12,1-billion tons, from which semi-soft coking coal, thermal coal and metallurgical coal can be produced. Grootegeluk also has the world’s largest beneficiation complex where 8 000 t/h of run-of-mine coal is upgraded in five different plants. Some 15 Mt of annual production is power station coal, transported directly to Eskom’s Matimba power station on 7-km conveyor belts in accordance with a 40-year contract that has 21 years remaining.
