About this development
The proposed Fairbreeze mineral sands mine, located 45km south-west of Richards Bay in Kwazulu-Natal, will be a hydraulic mining operation with a scope of 500 000 t/y of ilmenite and 60 000 t/y of zircon on average. Fairbreeze is designed to replace the depleting Hillendale mine, as the latter's grades continue to decline. In addition to the hydraulic mining unit, the mine will include a primary wet plant, a residue disposal facility and a mineral separation plant to treat heavy mineral concentrate. Estimated project value : R2,45 billion.
