About this development
The project involves the expansion of the Tenke Fungurume mine in the DRC which will result in a 50% increase in the mine's copper output, once it is complete in 2013. It entails an open pit mining operation and an initial 40-year mine plan has been developed based on current proven/probable reserves in just the Kwatebala, Tenke (also known as Goma) and Kavifwafwaulu (Fwaulu) orebodies. The deposits are made up of oxide, mixed oxide/sulphide and sulphide zones The $850-million expansion project will boost annual output from the mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo by about 150-million pounds (68 000 t) of copper cathode.
