About this development
Construction of a new standard gauge (1435mm) railway line from Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania to Isaka to Kigali in Rwanda with a link that will run from Keza to Musongati via Gitega in Burundi. The new railway line will facilitate the efficient movement of freight and passenger traffic, provide access to the port of Dar Es Salaam (DSM) and reduce transportation costs within the partner states. It will also attract and / or facilitate the enhanced undertaking of various economic activities, i.e mining, agriculture and industrial development. This component is the section from Dar Es Salaam to Isaka for a distance of approximately 970 km which will largely run parallel to the existing meter gauge (1000 mm) central corridor railway and in some locations be constructed within the right-of-way of the existing line.
