Project overview
About this development
Construction of a R500 million 30 000 t/y to 50 000 t/y hydrogen fluoride and aluminium trifluoride plant in the Mbonambi Municipality region, KwaZulu Natal. Hydrogen fluoride is used to manufacture aluminium trifluoride, which is used in the production of aluminium metal at the three aluminium smelters in South Africa and Mozambique. South Africa currently imports the aluminium trifluoride used at these plants. Hydrogen fluoride is also used to increase the octane level of petrol, in the stainless-steel manufacturing process, and to manufacture agrochemicals. This plant will manufacture hydrogen fluoride from the locally mined calcium fluoride.
