Additional 1 000MW to the Atlantis, Open-Cycle Gas-Turbine (OCGT)

Eskom board has sanctioned a plan to add an additional 1000MW of capacity to the Atlantis, open-cycle gas-turbine (OCGT) peaking power plant, in the Western Cape, where the first 1000MW plant is nearing commissioning. Studies to assess the viability of converting Atlantis to a combined-cycle gas turbine, thus making it a base-load facility, will also be carried out alongside a proposal for a second conventional nuclear facility in the Western Cape. Key to the conversion from OCGT would be the ability to secure a fuel source, which could either be gas or liquefied natural gas. Project value : R3.54 billion.
