The construction of Somerset West’s new public transport interchange (PTI) is progressing swiftly, with the City’s Urban Mobility Portfolio Committee visiting the site on Monday, 30 October 2023, to see the developments.

Initiated in January 2022, the construction of the PTI has an anticipated completion date of May 2024, assuming no unforeseen delays.

Councillor Rob Quintas, the City’s mayoral committee member for urban mobility, expressed his enthusiasm during the site visit, noting, ‘As we wrap up Transport Month, we are excited to see that the construction of the new Somerset West public transport interchange is going according to plan. Key structures are already standing. I would say 80% of this job is already done.’

Councillor Quintas added, ‘This PTI will accommodate minibus-taxi operators, bus services, informal traders and commuters. Convenience and making sure that you travel from a safe space are our objectives.’

The Somerset West PTI is located on the corner of Andries Pretorius Street and Victoria Street, positioning it as a central hub for the community.

Upon completion, it is projected to serve around 1 000 commuters and facilitate the operation of approximately 300 minibus taxis on a daily basis during the weekdays.

The new PTI aims to provide streamlined travel options to various destinations. Commuters operating from the PTI will have access to services travelling to 12 different locations, including Lwandle, Macassar, Firgrove, Strand, Nomzamo, Sir Lowry’s Pass Town, Zola, Khayelitsha, Stellenbosch, Somerset West and Grabouw.
