The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) is looking for SMMEs in Mpumalanga to apply for tenders related to road maintenance.

Targeted municipalities include Lekwa, Dipaleseng, and Pixely Ka Seme.

The scope of work includes erection and repair of permanent road traffic signs, collection and removal of debris and litter, and cleaning of concrete drains and channels, among many other responsibilities.

The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) is currently in talks with small businesses based in the Lekwa, Dipaleseng, and Pixely Ka Seme municipalities in Mpumalanga to prepare them for upcoming subcontracting opportunities for Routine Road Maintenance (RRM).

In an effort to equip small to medium enterprises with the necessary information and training to correctly bid for subcontracting opportunities, the team responsible for the project has hosted various business engagement sessions. This comes ahead of the rollout sometime this month.

The sessions commenced on last week Monday in Morgenzon, Standerton, Sinqobile, Volksrust, Greylingstad, and Grootvlei, and concluded in Balfour on Friday.

"We have been going around visiting small business in the respective municipalities to inform SMMEs about opportunities for subcontractors for RRM projects in the region which [were] rolled out from 1 August 2022.

"This is quite critical for us in ensuring the development of black-owned business, particularly those owned by women and youth to participate meaningfully on SANRAL projects," said SANRAL Project Manager Kwanele Simelane.

Across the three municipalities, SANRAL is responsible for the maintenance of approximately 347km of road, maintained by VEA, who is the main contractor on the R23, S27, R35, and N11 routes. The maintenance of these routes has to be carried out regularly and the role is usually awarded to small businesses in the vicinity.

"The contracts are worth a combined R146.8 million (for the selected municipalities), started early last year and will be in place for three years, 50% (approximately R73.4 million) will be allocated to local business.

"Last year we appointed subcontractors with Grade 1 and 2 CIDB for a period of twelve months. That period is almost over and it's time to appoint new contractors for another 12 months to do maintenance work on the roads," said Simelane.

For the Pixely ka Seme municipality, the compulsory tender briefing for interested applicants is on 11 August 2022, while the closing date for the tender will be on 26 august 2022. If all goes well, whoever is  appointmented will start work from 3 October 2022.

For Lekwa and Dipaleseng, the closing date for submission is scheduled for 19 September 2022 to allow SMMEs sufficient time to complete the documents. Appointed contractors will be will be expected to start on 1 November 2022.

Work packages for Gr 1 & 2 CE include:

Cleaning of prefabricated culverts
